Background

When it comes to power generation, fuel represents one of the highest operating costs, particularly diesel fuel. In Indonesia, PLN, the state-owned utility, required a more fuel-efficient solution than what was being provided by its former solutions provider. The need was for a 40MW plant to supply power to the capital city of West Sumatra, Padang. With the youngest, most advanced fleet in the industry, APR Energy was uniquely positioned with the most fuel-efficient technology available in the fast-track power market today to help PLN reduce its fuel costs.

Challenge

The customer was very concerned about power disruption during transition to APR Energy’s power plant. To alleviate this concern and minimize any downtime in power production, APR Energy worked with PLN to identify alternative plant locations whilst also coordinating with the previous provider during demobilization of its plant on the existing site. Additionally, the customer’s feeders could only handle a maximum of 20MW, so APR Energy’s engineering team had to ensure that the new plant designs functioned within these parameters. Shortly after commencing the project the customer lost one of its own gas turbines, further adding to the immediate power need.

Solution

APR Energy provided Diesel Power Modules form its Asian hub Strategically located in Malaysia. This product, an industry leader in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability, and emissions control, combined with APR Energy’s comprehensive operation and maintenance expertise to ensure a reliable and efficient supply of electricity to the customer. APR Energy’s flexibility to meet PLN’s needs allowed APR Energy to offer a phased delivery of 15MW, 20MW, and 5MW blocks in parallel with the former solution provider’s demobilization of the existing site.

Outcome

Not only did PLN experience a smooth transition during the installation of the APR Energy equipment, but it will also save substantially on fuel costs using the state of the art equipment and technology. APR Energy will continue to support and improve its plant performance throughout the contract term by conducting on going reviews of its operations and fuel efficiency. Further APR Energy Supported the local community by hiring and training more than 30 local workers for the plant.
