Introduction
To meet the operational requirements of battery for rolling stocks, Changhong nickel cadmium battery adopts several autonomous core technologies. The battery is with high floating charging performance, super-long maintenance intervals, long service life, high safety and other advantages, which is widely user as reliable backup power for vehicle-mounted lighting, signal communication, emergency ventilation, computer control system, gate control system, etc. and served as the power supply for tractors.
Core technologies
Advanced Sintered Electrode Technology
The core technologies, such as micro-scale nickel powder, high vacuum, slurry mixing and transmission at a constant temperature, exact temperature control at sintered process and speed drive control, are introduced from Germany VARTA, which makes the high porosity, high mechanical strength and high uniformity of electrode, and ensures no reaction between electrode and electrolyte. The electrode will remain intact during its whole service life, and there will be no "sudden death" caused by internal corrosion as lead acid battery, which guarantees the reliability of Changhong nickel cadmium battery as back-up power supply for trains and instant starting power supply for locomotives.
Self-developed Plastic Bonded Electrode Technology
The formula of negative electrode is made up of active material, binder and additive. The formed electrode is with high strength and low internal resistance. The electrode can improve the hydrogen evolution potential, reduce water consumption during battery operation, and extemd the battery maintenance intervals
Radiation Grafting Technology of Separator
In the long time irradiation of X-ray, the polymer of the polyethylene membrane cross-links with the hydrophilic group in the surface synergist, which greatly improves the hydrophilicity chemical stability and thermal stability of the separator and reduces the internal resistance; it can prevent the oxygen generated in the anode from compositing at the cathode, which effectively reduces the temperature rise during battery charging, and ensures the excellent discharge performance and reliability of the battery.
Composite Electrolyte Technology
The electrolyte is the potassium hydroxide solution with the optimal density and high purity, and additives are added into the electrolyte to lower the internal resistance of the battery, to improve the performance low temperature, discharge performance at large discharge current and charge performance at high temperature, which effectively extends the battery life.
Flame Retardant Technology
The container and lid of Changhong nickel-cadmium battery rolling stocks are made of semi- transparent flame-retardant material which is with anti-aging, anti-impact, light weight and anti-burning, and is convenient for monitoring the electrolyte condition.
Ultra-low Maintenance Performance Technology
The new flip-top vent plug developed and manufactured by Changhong can prevent the electrolyte along with the gas generated during charging from out flowing and keep it inside the single cell to avoid water reduction and extend the maintenance intervals. Meanwhile, the vent plug can prevent the carbon dioxide in the air getting into the electrolyte so as to ensure the battery performance and extend the service life. In addition, the specialized vent plug for topping-up of entire battery pack can be provided according to the needs of users to achieve quickly and accurately water filling, which can greatly simplifies the maintenance by personnel and extends the service life of battery to the greatest extent.

The charge acceptance ability under the constant voltage of 1.42V can reach over 90%>
Good Low Temperature
The discharged capacity can reach over 60% of the rated capacity, if the battery is continuously discharge at constant current of 0.3ItA at -40°C
Low Maintenance, Low Operation Cost
The longest topping-up period of battery can reach 24 months, and the maintenance is simple. The long service life and low maintenance make the operation low.
Integration Technology of Nickel Cadmium Battery for Rolling Stock
Battery Assembly
Optimize the battery assembly and reduce the overall weight and installation dimensions of battery pack. Inter-ceil connectors (nickel plating to improve the anti-corrosion ability) or connecting strips are used for connection between cells in series and insulating covers for protection of metal inter-cell connectors.



Temperature Monitoring of Battery Pack
Temperature sensors are installed inside the battery carrier for detecting the battery temperature and transmitting the temperature signal to train charger to prevent high temperature during charging and ensure the reliable performance of the battery and driving safety. The train charger adjusts the charging voltage to the battery based on the temperature signal to prevent quick water loss of electrolyte (shorten topping-up intervals) and therefore affects the service life.
Automatic Topping-up System
A new type of vent plug, supporting the operation of automatic topping-up vehicle, is designed by Changhong. It can achieve adding distilled water to entire battery pack without removing the vent plugs, which simplifies the maintenance by personnel and extends the battery life to the greatest extent.
Electric Protecting of Battery Pack
The electrical apparatus elements of outgoing line setting on positive an negative terminals are provided to protect the battery improve the safety and reliability of the battery during operation
